About

One engineer, one car, one bus.

Kairos Engineering is Lachlan Obren — a control systems engineer in South-East Queensland who drives a ZD8, takes it to Queensland Raceway, and wanted the data the lap timer couldn't give him.

Why01

This started because my own footage was boring and my own lap timer couldn't tell me why.

The specific thing you couldn't find out: you had GPS traces and you had GoPro clips, and neither one told you what your hands and feet were doing through a corner, or whether it was the same on the lap that was three tenths quicker. Then the car already knowing all of it — gear, throttle, brake, steering, yaw — and none of it reaching the tools people use at a track day.

How the order of events actually went: read the bus, decode it, align it to GPS time, put it on the video — and only then discover that was the interesting part and the hardware was just what it took to do it repeatably. Worth saying, because it explains why the browser tools exist before the board does.

Say plainly that this is not a company. A batch of five, hand-built, to find out whether anyone other than you wants one — which is why there is no team page, no logos, no “trusted by” and no price.

Background02

Not learning this on your car.

Designing something that sits on a bus and must not disturb it is the weekday job, on plant where the consequences are considerably worse than a check-engine light.

YearsRoleWhat it involved
2024 — now Control systems engineerPower generation & new energy Lead control engineer across traditional and renewable generation, data centres, buildings and defence sites. Controls and protection upgrades from concept through to issued-for-construction, PLC and DCS systems, onsite commissioning, testing and validation. Australian and New Zealand energy providers.
2023 Graduate engineerTechnology & innovation, major construction Automated internal processes across teams in Python, FME and C++. Built a computer-vision application tying spatial data to site logistics. GIS integration, VR/AR and 4D site planning on major Brisbane projects.
2018 — 2022 Network technician Deploying and managing physical servers, routing and enterprise network architecture across sites in South-East Queensland.
2018 — 2022 QUT — Mechatronics & Information SystemsGraduated with Honours Thesis: an autonomous hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered UGV — integrating fuel cell technology onto an existing robotic platform, across mechanical, electrical and software. Built and tested to a working MVP; highly commended, and now feeding further research.

Certifications

IEC 62443 (CS101, OT cyber security analysis). Currently working through the Cisco CCNA.

Before KAN_1 there was Torque Box

Custom ESP32 and STM32 boards for high-rate acquisition, with hardware interfaces built for variable-reluctance and hall-effect ABS sensors. Same car, earlier answer to the same question.

Rules03

How this gets run.

Four rules written down in advance, so they are harder to quietly drop later.

Nothing claimed that isn't measured

Every number on this site traces to a real session or a real datasheet. Where something is unbuilt, unverified or unknown, it says so — including on the page meant to sell you something.

Your data is yours

Plain CSV, unencrypted, no account and no cloud. The browser tools run entirely on your machine — there is no server for them to upload to, which is also why they cost nothing to keep free.

No pre-orders

No money is taken for hardware that doesn't exist. When there are boxes on a shelf, there will be a way to buy one. Until then it is a list.

Open about the boring parts

The ZD8 signal list gets published. So does the export format, and the reasoning behind the design decisions — including the ones that were wrong first time. Gatekeeping a CAN ID helps nobody.

Contact04

Getting hold of me.

There is no email address published on this site, deliberately — a scraped address is permanent and a form isn't. The list is the way in, and it has a free-text box on it.

Name the three people whose messages are worth most — a ZD8 owner who tracks the car, a RaceChrono DIY builder, someone who has already fought a closed lap-timer app for clean data — and ask them for the one specific thing that would shape what the first five do.

The list is the whole plan right now.

No payment, no obligation, one email when there is something real to say — and it is also how the decision about a second batch actually gets made.
